April 1, 2009-USC Pro Day.

USC’s Pro Day gave NFL scouts another opportunity to see their potential picks, and the Former Trojans didn’t disappoint.

A huge amounts of scouts, and gms were watching with wide open eyes, and hoping that they could cash in on a early Christmas gift that will be wrapped in cardinal and gold on April 25.

Pro-day: It’s the day where most football players dream of, practice for, and hope to impressive a scout, a coach, or two.

It’s their final job interview.

40- Times

USC’s Pro Day
LB- Kaluka Maiva 4.68
LB Clay Matthews 4.57
LB Brian Cushing 4.68
LB Rey Maualuga 4.68

S Kevin Ellison 4.70
CB Cary Harris 4.89
WR Patrick Turner 4.63
DE Kyle Moore 4.76

Who was there?

30 out of the 32 teams had a representative. The only two teams were Denver Broncos, and Houston Texans.

Whose Who?

Coaches

Saints coach Sean Payton
Vikings coach Brad Childress
49ers coach Mike Singletary
Lions coach Jim Schwartz

GMs

Detroit Lions’ Martin Mayhew
New Orleans Saints’ Mickey Loomis
Minnesota Vikings’ Rick Spielan
Arizona Cardinals’ Rod Graves
Green Bay Packers’ Ted Thompson

Coordinators

Detroit Lions’ Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan
New Orleans Saints’ Defensive Coordinator Gregg William

Owner

Arizona Cardinals’ owner Bill Bidwil

As for the quarterback sweepstakes, it looks like the Seattle Seahawks, and Jacksonville Jaguars are both very interested in Mark Sanchez. One took him to out to lunch while the other dinner, and both camps came away impressed, and might make Sanchez, a wildcard pick that could alter, and create chaos for the rest of the draft.

Matt Stafford has been selected #1 in the upcoming draft predictions since its first rough draft. The problem with Stafford, he’s performed great, but not as the overwhelming number one pick, or rather the number one quarterback. This has been Sanchez’ advantage, and he’s using it. What Stafford lacks, Sanchez is trying to prove to coaches he has. Leadership in the form of a charismatic, competitive individual who can lead a team, and do the impossible on the field. He needs to posses the rare, x-factor that Joe Montana, Tom Brady, and Brett Favre displayed on the field, which drove defensive coordinators crazy. It Sanchez can convince his x-factor ability, one should not be amazed if he’s drafted in the top five in the NFL draft.

The other Trojan who solidified his status to be a first round pick is Rey Maualuga. His poor 40 time in the NFL Draft Combine, probably dropped him a tad from the other three Trojan’s superstar linebackers in the speed category. After watching the other three linebackers, and his other USC Trojan’s teammates run the 40; Rey Rey wanted to do it, too. So, he decided that he would attempt to run it after the pro workout, and he did it in a great time 4.68.

The NFL Draft is a projection on how a college player might play football at the professional level. Many factors go into the projection, but one technique that a lot of NFL teams use is to draft big, strong, fast players from big time college programs. The USC Trojans, LSU Tigers, and Ohio State Buckeyes immediately come to mind when thinking about college teams that send a ton of players into the NFL each year. This year USC is going to break the bank with as many as four players selected in the first round alone! Heck if eligible, sophomore safety Taylor Mays would have declared, we could have seen five USC players in the first round. That is unprecedented folks, but highly likely in this 2009 NFL Draft. NFL Draft Dog has four USC prospects being drafted in their 2009 NFL Mock Draft.

Junior Quarterback Mark Sanchez and three senior Linebackers: Brian Cushing, Clay Mathews and Rey Maualuga will almost certainly be drafted in the first round. Six months ago, Maualuga was the front runner to be drafted first of those four. He (Maualuga) has incredible size at 6’ 2” 250 pounds and hits like a ton of bricks. However, Maualuga came to the NFL Scouting Combine out of shape, ran a poor 4.82 forty yard dash and injured his hamstring. Red flags have been raised and Maualuga might slip into the latter portion of round one, but he is too good to slip too far.

OLB Clay Mathews (6’ 3” 240 lbs) has been a consistent, steady riser up the draft boards all year and has looked quick and athletic during post season workouts by running a respectable 4.67 forty at the combine. Who would have thought that Mathews would end up as the fastest USC linebacker? OLB Brian Cushing didn’t run great at the combine either (4.74), but he looked quick in the drills and if you look closely you would see he had the fastest 3-cone time (6.84) of all the linebackers. Cushing (6’ 3 245 lbs) will be fine and should be drafted around the middle of the first round.

QB Mark Sanchez is the wild card, he only played quarterback for a full year and he came out early disappointing coach Pete Carroll. Coach Carroll didn’t think he was ready for the Draft and I believe him, I don’t think Carroll made that statement for selfish reasons. However, in saying that, Sanchez has incredible measurables and he is an intriguing projection. He has decent size, (6’ 2” 227 lbs) arms strength and accuracy and some NFL team will likely take a chance on him in the early to middle part of round one. But NFL Draft Dog would not be surprised to see him slip into the late first/early second round.

The first round is not the only round that will see Trojans drafted, defensive tackle Fili Moala (6’ 4” 305 lbs) was thought of as a first rounder entering the season. Fili didn’t have a dominant season and subsequently has slipped a little. Fili did run well at the combine (5.10) however and will likely be drafted in the second or third round. If he slips into the 3rd round he will be a steal. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be shocked to see him drafted in the late first round, he is that good.

Now we have the second tier prospects, likely drafted on the second day of the 2009 NFL Draft. Another player that I like is receiver Patrick Turner (6’ 5” 223 lbs). Turner is not blazing fast, but he runs great routes, starts and stops on a dime, is huge and has great hands. Turner was the best receiver at the 2009 Senior Bowl. He (Turner) had a nice season catching 49 passes for 741 yards and 10 touchdowns. I think Turner will be a solid NFL player, likely drafted in the 5th or 6th round, but with a good forty yard dash time at USC’s Pro Day on April 1st he could really elevate his draft stock maybe into the 3rd round area.
Defensive end Kyle Moore is a talented kid with nice size (6’ 5” 272 lbs). He is not that well known, but after his April 1st Pro day I look for Moore to become a household name to the NFL Scouts. Moore led the Trojans with 6 sacks in 2008.

Defensive backs (S) Kevin Ellison and (CB) Cary Harris are both under-rated prospects. Both prospects are thought of as very athletic but not real fast. Probably late round picks, but I think Ellison can be a starter in the NFL with Harris a possible special teams contributor. If linebacker Kaluka Maiava was two inches taller and 10 pounds heavier he could be right up there with Cushing and Mathews, he is a standout prospects with excellent closing speed and instincts. However, his size (6’ 0” 228 lbs) will likely hold him back a little as he is kind of tweener between safety and linebacker. All Pac Ten kicker David Buehler has a chance to make an NFL team as a free agent, but scouts will probably remember the nightmarish end to his career as he ended the regular season missing three field goals against rival UCLA.

So Trojan fans, watching the 2009 NFL Draft on April 25 and 26th you should see quite a few familiar faces walk across the stage and put on an NFL hat for whatever lucky NFL team drafts them.

Mark Sanchez has a very difficult situation ahead of him. Should he enter the NFL draft, and risk being taken in the late first round or early second round, or stay another year at USC?

One has to firmly believe he’s leaning towards staying at USC since he talked to Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer, and they both decided to stay for their senior season. One would be shocked if Sanchez left for the NFL.

Lets pretend we’re in Mark Sanchez’s shoes, and face his difficult situation.

First off, we have to first consider the other college quarterback’s competition in the NFL draft.

So far, the two quarterbacks getting a lot of attention are Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford and Georgia’s Matthew Stafford.

Comparing their 2008 stats together:

Sam Bradford- 304/442 for 4464 yards, 68.3% CMP, 48 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and a 186.29 quarterback rating.
Matt Stafford- 235/383 for 3,459 yards, 61.4% CMP, 25 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a 153.4 quarterback rating.
Mark Sanchez-241/366 for 3,207 yards, 65.8% CMP, 34 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 164.4 quarterback rating.

Based on stats alone, Sam Bradford had the better year.

Size, Weight, and 40 time

Sam Bradford-6-4, 218 lbs, 40 time: 4.72
Matt Stafford- 6-3, 238 lbs, 40 time: 4.75
Mark Sanchez-6-3, 225 lbs, 40 time: 4.71

Now, lets look at what the scouts have said:

Sam Bradford

Positive: a great arm, a cerebral approach to the position and an ideal quarterback’s build at 6 feet 4. (Football Analysts)Brady-like: Quick arm, extremely accurate, and quick release (NFL front-man)
Negative : not vocal, doesn’t have elite arm-strength, and adjusting from a shotgun-heavy offense at Oklahoma to playing primarily under center in the NFL. (Todd McShay-Director of Scout)

Matt Stafford

Positive: NFL Pocket-Passer (ESPN Matt Kiper). Strong Arm, Naturally gifted and strong in the pocket (Former NFL scout-Russ Lande)
Negative: Occasionally throws balls up for grabs when pressured up the middle. Some question his inability to lead Georgia to wins in games over elite team (Former NFL scout-Russ Lande).

Mark Sanchez

Positive: Great mechanics and footwork (NFL front-man),
Negative: Not enough experience, durability, and needs more exposure to demonstrate his stats were not due to his offensive line and playmakers (NFL front-man)

Interesting Note:

Todd McShay, Director for Scout. Inc released his NFL Draft quarterback ranking:

1. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma
2. Mark Sanchez, USC
3. Matthew Stafford, Georgia
4. Nate Davis, Ball State
5. Josh Freeman, Kansas State
6. Tim Tebow, Florida
7. Graham Harrell, Texas Tech
8. Rhett Bomar, Sam Houston State
9. Mike Reilly, Central Washington
10. Drew Willy, Buffalo
11. Nate Brown, Central Arkansas
12. John Parker Wilson, Alabama
13. Chase Daniel, Missouri
14. Cullen Harper, Clemson
15. Curtis Painter, Purdue

Is their something Todd knows about Sanchez that we don’t?

NFL teams that need a quarterback in their drafting order, and the contract signed by last year player at their respected number.

1. Detroit Lions ( 5 years for $57.5 million- $30 million guaranteed)
3.Kansas City Chiefs (5 years for $51 million-$23 million guaranteed)
10. San Francisco 49ers (5 years for $18.9 million-$13.8 million guaranteed)
17. New York Jets (5 years for $15 million-$ 8.9 guaranteed)
18. Chicago Bears (5 years for $30 million-$ 8.75 guaranteed)
19.Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5 years for $14.4 million-$8.965 guaranteed)
21.Detroit Lions (again) (5 years for $13.5 million-$7.8 guaranteed)

A player selected in the top 10 guaranteed money is the same as an individual who falls middle round for his whole contract including guaranteed money. If one’s career is not a complete success such as Tim Crouch, or Ryan Leaf; guaranteed money is golden. If Matt Leinart would have forgo his senior year he could have signed to a 6 year contract for $49.5 million- $24 million guaranteed. By waiting an extra year, Matt was selected 10th and signed a 6 year contract for 50 million-$14 million guaranteed. A difference of 10 million dollars guaranteed, however, he led the Trojans to the National Championship title game in his senior year. It all boils down to the values of the individual. Does Mark want his college degree, or is his primary goal to be in the NFL now?

Fight On, USC Trojans!
